Preparing Your Car for Fall in Kansas

As temperatures begin to drop and summer gives way to cooler weather, it’s a good time to make sure your vehicle is ready for fall in Kansas. Seasonal temperature swings, rainy days, shorter daylight hours, and the approach of winter can all put additional demands on your car.

A little preventive maintenance now can help you avoid inconvenient breakdowns later. At Lenexa Automotive, we recommend checking several key areas of your vehicle before colder weather settles into the Lenexa area.

Fall Car Maintenance Checklist

Check Your Battery Health

Cold weather can be hard on an aging or weak battery. A battery that seemed perfectly fine during the summer may struggle once temperatures begin dropping.

Before fall turns into winter, have your battery and charging system checked. Watch for warning signs such as:

  • Slow engine cranking
  • Dim headlights or interior lights
  • Electrical problems
  • A battery or charging-system warning light
  • A battery that is several years old

Testing your battery now can give you time to replace a weak one before you find yourself dealing with a vehicle that won’t start on a cold Kansas morning.

Inspect Your Tires

Your tires are especially important as roads become colder and wetter. Proper tread depth helps your vehicle maintain traction during rain and other changing road conditions.

Check your tires for:

  • Low or uneven tread
  • Cracks, bulges, or other visible damage
  • Uneven wear
  • Proper tire pressure

Remember that tire pressure can drop as outside temperatures fall. Checking your pressure regularly throughout the season can help improve handling, tire life, and fuel efficiency.

If you notice uneven tire wear, it may also be worth having your wheel alignment and suspension inspected.

Test Your Heating and Climate Control System

You don’t want to discover that your heater isn’t working properly on the first truly cold morning of the season.

Run your vehicle’s heating system before cold weather arrives and make sure warm air reaches the cabin normally. You should also test the windshield defroster. A properly functioning defroster is important for maintaining visibility on chilly or damp mornings.

If the system isn’t producing enough heat, takes unusually long to warm up, or isn’t clearing the windshield properly, have it inspected.

Replace Worn Windshield Wipers

Summer heat and sun exposure can dry out and damage windshield wiper blades. By fall, worn blades may begin streaking, skipping, or leaving sections of the windshield uncleared.

Good visibility becomes even more important during fall rain and shorter daylight hours.

Replace your wiper blades if they:

  • Leave streaks across the windshield
  • Skip or chatter while operating
  • Have cracked or damaged rubber
  • Fail to clear water effectively

It’s also a good idea to check your windshield washer fluid and refill it when necessary.

Check Your Brakes

Wet roads and changing weather make dependable braking especially important. If you’re hearing unusual brake noises or noticing changes in braking performance, don’t put off an inspection.

Common warning signs include:

  • Squealing or grinding
  • Vibration while braking
  • A soft or unusually firm brake pedal
  • The vehicle pulling to one side
  • Longer stopping distances

Having your brakes inspected during a fall maintenance visit can help identify worn components before winter driving conditions arrive.

Check Fluids and Routine Maintenance

Fall is also a convenient time to review your vehicle’s regular maintenance needs.

Depending on your vehicle, that may include checking:

  • Engine oil
  • Coolant
  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid
  • Windshield washer fluid
  • Belts and hoses
  • Filters

Keeping up with preventive maintenance can help your vehicle operate more reliably as temperatures continue to fall.
